It provides\na means for improving  water use efficiency\nand cutting labor requirements. Excessive water is often\nused in current irrigation methods; water application\nefficiencies usually do not average over 50 to 60 percent. Although\nmany factors affect irrigation efficiency, the water\nfacilities and management practices used by the individual\noperator have the greatest effect.\nCompetition for available national water supplies is increasing\nrapidly.
