Cultivars that continue leaf development and\nnutrient uptake while maintaining maximum tuber\ngrowth rates may have higher final tuber yields, yet\ndifferent N requirements. The objective of this study\nwas to obtain information relating plant growth rates to\nN availability for selected potato cultivars. Total dry\nmatter accumulation, and N assimilation patterns of\nindeterminant cultivars, 'Russet Burbank', 'Lemhi Russet,\n'Centennial Russet', and one advanced selection\nA66107-51, were compared-with that of two determinant\ncultivars 'Pioneer' and 'Norgold Russet', at three N\nlevels. Cultivars were grown in a field experiment on a\nPortneuf silt-loam soil (Xerollic Calciorthids).\n\nHigh available soil N levels at planting delayed the\nlinear potato tuber growth period 7 to 10 days but had\nminor effects on the time of tuber initiation for the\nindeterminant varieties. Maximum tuber growth rates\n(tuber bulking) were 900 to 1,300 kg/ha/day. A66107-51\nwas superior in N-use efficiency to the other cultivars.\nBetween 70 and 100% of the total available N was utilized\nby this cultivar in producing high yields. This information\nmay be used to select lines and cultivars that will\noptimize production. A knowledge of plant growth and\nN uptake rates can improve the fertilizer recommendations\nfor each cultivar."^^xsd:string;
