	bibo:abstract "The response of bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) to N fertilization\nunder field conditions indicates different Rhizobia-cultivar\nrelationships or symbiotic N?-fixation limitations\ndue to the cultivars. We have used the acetylene\nreduction method to determine the relative seasonal\nN?(C?H?) fixation of several field-grown bean cultivars.\nThe relative nitrogenase activity was estimated from 3-\nX 15-cm soil cores taken around the main root of a decapitated\nplant. Activities rapidly increased from the\nthree node vegetative (V3) to early pod-filling (R3-R4)\ngrowth stages, thereafter decreasing to zero at physiological\nmaturity (R9). Accumulated daily activity totals\nshowed a five- to sixfold difference in seasonal N?(C?H?)\nfixation between cultivars, which was significantly related\nto the average nodule weight and to the plant dry weight\nnear physiological maturity. However, cultivars\nsimilar plant dry weights had a two- to threefold difference\nin relative N?(C?H?) fixation. Seed yields and total-N\nupdates were also positively related. These observations\nindicate that it may be possible to increase both the\nsymbiotic N? fixation and seed yields through plant breeding."^^xsd:string;
