"As the demand for water and the\ncost of irrigation continue to increase,\nagriculture must increase\nits efficiency of water use. As farms\nbecome larger and skilled irrigators\nmore scarce, good irrigation water\nmanagement becomes more difficult.\nEven though scientific research\nhas developed many principles that\ncan greatly improve irrigation water\nmanagement, determining when to\nirrigate has not changed significantly.\nA solution to this need is a\nmethod of determining how much\nwater is used each day in plant\ntranspiration and soil evaporation\nfrom easily obtainable meteorological\ndata. The sum of evaporation\nand transpiration is commonly called\nevapotranspiration. At the Snake\nRiver Conservation Research Center,\nwe are developing such procedures\nfrom studies of evapotranspiration\nas related to weather conditions,\nthe type of crop, the amount\nof plant growth, the stage of growth,\nand the wetness of the soil surface."^^ .
