	bibo:abstract "That thermal gradients cause moisture transport\nin soil has been well known for at least 50\nyears. It is, however, surprising that so little attention\nhas been paid to this phenomenon, since\nsoil in its natural environment is continuously\nsubject to changing temperatures. In 1957 Philip\nand de Vries (14) published a theoretical article\nin which they attempted to reconcile the few\nexisting experimental data. Since then, alternative\napproaches have been suggested by Derjaguin\nand Melnikova (5), Matthes and Bowen\n(12), and Taylor and Cary (16). The experimental\nobservations available are, however, insufficient\nto make a fair test of any of the proposed\ntheories. As a general statement, about all\nthat can be said is: A thermal gradient in soil will\ncause water to move from a warm to a cooler\narea in both the liquid and vapor phases, and\nthe rate of transfer is greater than can be predicted\nwith Lick's law and the diffusion coefficient\nfor water vapor into air.\n\nThe experiment reported in this article was designed\nto yield data defining the relative importance\nof thermal gradients in transporting\nsoil moisture and to probe the mechanisms of\ntransfer."^^xsd:string;
